A plan to merge the library and the state archive in the Ludwigsbahnhof on Steubenplatz , which was no longer needed from 1912 , was also not carried out due to the beginning of the First World War .

Schmidt was a long-time member of the board of the Association of German Librarians . From 1904 on he was a member of the Prussian commission for the publication of a complete catalog of the cradle prints and from 1913 a member of the administrative committee of the German library in Leipzig.
