Adolf Spiwakowski
Adolf Spiwakowski ( Russian Адольф Спиваковский ; * 1891 in Smila ; † August 19, 1958 in Melbourne ) was a Russian- German-Australian singer (bass baritone) and music teacher.
Life
Adolf Spiwakowski was one of nine children of Chasan David Spiwakowski and his wife Rahel and thus one of the four Spiwakowski brothers who all became musicians and teachers: Adolf, Jascha (1896–1970), Isaak (1902–1977) and Tossi (1906 -1998). Her nephew was the British violinist , conductor and composer Michael Spivakovsky (1919–1983).
Adolf Spiwakowski showed his musical talent early on. He was first taught by his father. In 1902 the family moved to Odessa . During the pogrom of October 18th jul. / October 31, 1905 greg. until October 22nd July / 4th November 1905 greg. in Odessa (at the end of the Russian Revolution in 1905 ) the Spiwakowski family barely escaped death, but had lost all their belongings through looting. Adolf's brother Jascha Spiwakowski continued to give concerts as a pianistic child prodigy to support the family and to earn money for an emigration.
The family emigrated to Berlin in 1907 . In 1908 Adolf Spiwakowski began to study singing . He then performed in Europe as a bass-baritone singer. During the First World War he had to break off his stage career in 1916 after an operation for stomach cancer , so that he now fully concentrated on teaching in Germany.
After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, Adolf Spiwakowski emigrated to Australia with his younger brothers . He taught at Melbourne University until his death. In 1973 his widow Paula Spiwakowski († 1974) founded the Adolf Spiwakowski Prize with grants for young composers from Commonwealth countries . Since 2007, the prize has been awarded by the Melbourne University of Melbourne.
