biography

Torstrik studied at the University of Kiel , Leipzig University and the Georg-August University of Göttingen , where he in 1844 with a dissertation about the Irish philosopher Johannes Scotus Eriugena Dr. phil. received his doctorate . He then worked from 1844 to 1850 as a tutor for the family of Prince Davidoff in Saint Petersburg. After returning to Germany, he taught at the model school in Frankfurt am Main from 1850 to 1855 and then deepened his studies in Paris and Berlin , where he came into contact with the historian of philosophy Eduard Zeller .

From Easter 1858 Torstrik taught as a full teacher (later professor) at the scholars' school in Bremen . In addition to teaching, he was engaged in scientific research, the focus of which was Aristotle 's writings. In 1862 his critical edition of De anima appeared . The Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin hired Torstrik in 1874 as editor for the Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca (CAG) project . As part of this project, critical editions of the ancient commentaries on Aristotle's writings were to be created. In this context, Torstrik took six months' leave in 1875 and 1876 to examine the manuscripts of the Commentaries on Aristotle kept in libraries in Italy, England, Spain and France. On March 24, 1876, the Academy appointed him full-time editor after Torstrik had already been elected a corresponding member on February 10 of that year.

Shortly after returning from his second research trip, Torstrik died unexpectedly at the age of 56. Hermann Diels was appointed as his successor as editor of the CAG , who brought the project to a close in 1909.
