Commentaria in Aristotle Graeca
The Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca (CAG) are the scientifically fundamental edition of the ancient and late ancient Greek commentaries on the writings of the philosopher Aristotle . It was created by numerous philologists on behalf of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin under the editing of Hermann Diels .
history
The CAG was preceded by the great Aristotle Complete Edition of the Berlin Academy, the volumes of which had been available since 1836 and which was completed with the appearance of the indices in 1870. In order to make the history of the impact and reception of Aristotelian philosophy comprehensible, the numerous ancient and Byzantine commentaries had to be published in critical editions . In 1874 the philosopher Eduard Zeller applied to the Academy to include a corresponding edition project. For the first time, the edition should be based on a precise comparison of the manuscripts.
The Academy accepted the application and entrusted Zeller and members Hermann Bonitz and Johannes Vahlen with the supervision of the company. The philologist Adolf Torstrik was appointed editor , but he died in 1877. After his death, Hermann Diels took over the task. Under his leadership, the company's 23 volumes were published in 51 sub-volumes from 1882 to 1909 by Verlag Georg Reimer . The originally planned volumes 24 and 25, which were supposed to contain the comments of the Byzantine metropolitan Leo Magentinus and various comments of unexplained authorship, were not realized.
The text-critical editions of the CAG often represent editiones principles of the respective texts and have often not yet been replaced by more recent editions.
Completion, continuation, translation
The CAG was supplemented by the Supplementum Aristotelicum in six volumes during the project phase . They have been continued since 2007 through the edition of further Aristotle commentaries up to the Byzantine period in the Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca et Byzantina (CAGB), which were published by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences under the direction of Dieter Harlfinger , Christof Rapp , Marwan Rashed and Diether R. Reinsch published.
A supplement to a commentary by Alexander was found by Emma Gannagé in an Arabic work. She has identified four chapters (2.2-5) of the lost commentary by Alexander von Aphrodisias on Aristotle 's work On Becoming and Passing away in an Arabic translation by the alchemist Jābir ibn Hayyān from the 8th century and presented them for the first time in a translation. Gannagé was able to show that Alexander tried in this commentary to combine Aristotle's theory of changes in substance and its physics into a unified theory.
A large number of these comments have now been translated into English as part of the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle Project (ACA) initiated and led by Richard Sorabji .
