Adolf Busse (born December 28, 1856 in Czarnikau , Province of Posen , † October 11, 1942 in Berlin ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Adolf Busse attended the grammar school in Züllichau and studied classical philology after graduating in autumn 1876. After two semesters each in Tübingen and Leipzig , he went to Berlin University for the winter semester of 1878/79 . There he belonged to the philological seminar under the direction of Adolf Kirchhoff and Johannes Vahlen and was particularly close to the philosophy historian Eduard Zeller , who introduced him to Aristotelian philosophy. On January 29, 1881 Busse was appointed Dr. phil. PhD .

After the teaching examination, Busse taught at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin , where he was also appointed high school professor. From Easter 1902 to Easter 1922 he was director of the Askanisches Gymnasium in Berlin, where the classical philologist and religious historian Otto Gruppe taught from 1876 to 1916, under whose "protectorate" a "cultural history association" was set up there immediately after Busses took office.

In addition to school service, Busse dealt intensively with Greek philosophy since Plato and Aristotle, especially with its development and reception up to late antiquity . As part of the Commentaria in Aristotelem Graeca (CAG) company of the Prussian Academy of Sciences , Busse produced nine critical text editions, which appeared from 1887 to 1904 and have partly not been replaced to this day.

Adolf von Harnack and Theodor Mommsen apparently also wanted it for the planned expansion of the Prosopographia Imperii Romani to the 4th to 6th centuries, the Prosopographia Imperii Romani saeculorum IV.V.VI. win as a processor of the late antique philologists.

Adolf Busse died in Berlin in 1942 at the age of 85. He was buried in Cemetery IV of the Jerusalem and New Church on Bergmannstrasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg . The grave has not been preserved.
