Adolf W. Lohmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adolf Wilhelm Lohmann (born April 20, 1926 in Salzwedel ; † December 15, 2013 ) was a German physicist who dealt with optical information processing and holography . He was a professor of physics at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .

Live and act

Lohmann studied at the University of Hamburg , where he obtained his physics diploma in 1951 and his doctorate in 1953. Then he worked at the TH Braunschweig , where he became a professor. In 1958/59 he was a visiting scientist at the Royal Technical University in Stockholm and in 1961 he was a visiting scientist at the IBM research laboratory in San José . In 1963 he was permanently employed in the IBM research laboratory and headed the Optical Signal Processing Division. From 1967 he was a lecturer and from 1968 professor at the University of California, San Diego . In 1973 he returned to Germany to the newly created Chair for Applied Optics at the University of Erlangen. In 1992 he retired .

Around 1968 he and Byron R. Brown invented a method for generating computer-generated holograms (CGH). Two years earlier, both had introduced Fourier transform techniques for this purpose . He was a Fellow of the Optical Society of America , whose National Traveling Lecturer he was 1967/68.
