Karl Friedrich Adolf Wuttke (born November 10, 1819 in Breslau , † April 12, 1870 in Halle (Saale) ) was a Lutheran theologian , author and politician .

Life

The father, a master tailor, sent his son Adolf to the prestigious Maria Magdalenen grammar school in Breslau in 1830 . After graduating from high school - together with the later doctor Rudolf Leubuscher - in 1840 Adolf Wuttke studied Protestant theology at the University of Breslau . He was strongly influenced by the philosopher Christlieb Julius Braniss (1792–1873). In 1844 he passed his first theological exam and the rector's exam. He was then a candidate both in Königsberg (Prussia) and in his hometown of Breslau. During this time he had the opportunity to deal with the different religious movements under Johannes Ronge and Julius Rupp . After the second theological exam , Wuttke received his doctorate in 1848 with the thesis "Buddhaistarum disciplina" in Breslau, where he also habilitated on the advice of Braniss .

With a short break in Königsberg, he taught from 1849 to 1854 at the Protestant theological faculty of the University of Breslau. However, he could only finance his livelihood with additional income as a teacher and assistant chaplain. His “Geschichte des Heidentums”, which appeared in two volumes in 1852 and 1853, led to an appointment as associate professor of theology at the University of Berlin in 1854 .

For his meritorious work he was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. theol. Honoris causa) by his faculty in 1860 . In 1861 he was appointed to the theological faculty of the University of Halle . In addition to Julius Müller, he taught systematic theology here.

Since he wanted to anchor Christian values in politics as well, as a member of the old conservative party , he was also a member of the Prussian House of Representatives for a legislative period .

Wuttke was a permanent contributor to Lutheran-denominational church newspapers and pastoral conferences. His main works contributed to his becoming known far beyond the limits of theological science. "Der deutsche Volksaberglaube" was published in a new edition in 2006 by a publishing house in Leipzig . Wuttke was an honorary member of the Berlin and Halle Wingolf . At the funeral of Adolf Wuttke in Halle (Saale) August Tholuck gave the funeral oration .
