Benjamin Kibebe (born August 13, 1981 in Addis Ababa ) is a former Swedish football player of Ethiopian origin. The defender , who has spent part of his career in Norway, Denmark and Switzerland, made his only appearance for the Swedish national team in 2001 .

Career

Kibebe started playing football at Rågsveds IF in 1988 . In 1994 he moved to the youth department of IF Brommapojkarna before moving to Hammarby IF after three years . There he stayed only one season, however, and joined local rivals AIK in 1998 .

In 1999, Kibebe moved up to the men's squad of AIK, but initially only played in the Svenska Cupen in the 1-0 win against Västerås SK in the round of the last 64 teams. He made his debut in the Allsvenskan in the following season and came to ten premier league appearances, as well as one game in the European Cup . He was then appointed to the opening international matches of the Swedish national team in 2001. In the 1-0 defeat against the Finnish national team by a goal by Timo Marjamaa on February 1 of that year, he made his debut as a substitute when he replaced Olof Persson at half-time in the national jersey. In the subsequent 2001 season he was able to establish himself on the side of Per Nilsson , Jimmy Tamandi and Daniel Tjernström as a regular in the defense and played 24 of the 26 league games.

After AIK separated from the former trainer Olle Nordin , Kibebe lost his regular place under his successor Peter Larsson . Even when he was knocked out during the season, he found himself mainly on the bench under Dušan Uhrin . It was only under the English coach Richard Money that he was preferred again and played 21 games in the 2004 season .

Nevertheless, Kibebe announced his departure from Swedish football and moved to the Norwegian Tippeligaen to Tromsø IL . For the two-time national cup winner to date, he only missed one league game in his first season. At the end of the following season, Sturla Voll , the coach of the league rivals Aalesunds FK , who had been promoted to the first division , tried to sign the defender. Even at his new club, with which he fought against direct relegation to the Adeccoligaen , he was a regular player and was used in all 26 first division games. After another six months in the Tippeligaen, he left the club.

In the summer of 2008 Kibebe signed a three-year contract with FC Nordsjælland in the Danish Superliga . Due to the Norwegian transfer system, he was only eligible to play for his new employer from August 1, but was still able to play in the club's initial formation. At the side of Dennis Cagara , Henrik Kildentoft , and his compatriots Johnny Lundberg and Andreas Dahl , he played 30 games in his debut season, in the 3-1 away win over SønderjyskE he scored his only league goal. After Andreas Bjelland was signed in the summer of 2009, he was temporarily pushed out of the starting line-up, but was still able to stay in the defensive line for long periods of the season. At the end of the season he reached the final of the national cup with the club . There he formed the four-man defense chain with Pierre Bengtsson , Michael Parkhurst and Henrik Kildentoft, which remained without conceding a goal in extra time after goals from Nicolai Winther-Stokholm and Bajram Fetai in the 2-0 win over FC Midtjylland and thus contributed to the title win.

At the beginning of May 2010, Kibebe signed a three-year contract with the Swiss Super League club FC Luzern , but already moved to the second highest Swiss league after one season at SC Kriens , before moving to the Danish first division club FC Midtjylland in the following season 2012/13 .
