Adolph Godeffroy
Adolph Godeffroy (born November 28, 1814 in Hamburg ; † December 13, 1893 there ) was a Hamburg merchant, member of the Hamburg Parliament , co-founder of Hapag and its first director.
Life
Adolph Godeffroy attended the Citizens' School of the Katharineum in Lübeck and at times a school in Switzerland . He made his commercial training at Parish & Co . The owner Richard Parish (1776-1860) was married to Susanne Godeffroy, daughter of Peter Godeffroy , a brother of his grandfather. Adolph was born in 1837 by his father Johan Cesar Godeffroy (1781–1845) for his father's company Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & Son sent to Havana to set up a branch there under the name Godeffroy & Son . There he was mainly involved in buying sugar and coffee . He worked in Cuba until his father's death in 1845 and then returned to Hamburg. His older brother Cesar (1813–1885) had already taken over the management of his father's company. His younger brother Gustav (1817–1893) had also become a partner in the company. Adolph Godeffroy obtained in 1845 for Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & Sohn procuration, but did not become a partner.
Through his experiences in America, Adolph Godeffroy realized that there was a need for regular shipping connections to North America . Therefore, together with other Hamburg merchants, on May 27, 1847 he founded the Hamburg-American Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft . He was elected its first director and ran the company for the next 33 years.
Adolph Godeffroy was married to his second cousin Antonine Emelie Godeffroy (1816–1877) for the first time. In 1879 he married the widow Harriet Milberg, b. Schröder (1836–1899), a daughter of Johann Heinrich Schröder .
He worked for several years as a deacon of the French Reformed congregation in Hamburg.
In the civil military he was a member of the cavalry , from July 7, 1853 as first lieutenant, in 1855 as Rittmeister .
From 1852 Adolph Godeffroy was a member of the Commerzdeputation , which he headed as President in 1858. In addition, he volunteered in various deputations. From 1859 to 1867 he was a member of the Hamburg parliament .
Adolph Godeffroy was president of the Hamburg racing club from 1854 to 1868.
The grave of Adolph Godeffroy is today in the old Niendorf cemetery in Hamburg. However, he was reburied from another cemetery.
