Political career

Georgiadis was initially active in the student organization of the Nea Dimokratia . He later joined the LAOS party and was its press spokesman from December 2003 to August 2007 and then general secretary . From September 2007 to February 2012 he was a member of the Greek Parliament for LAOS. From November 2011 to February 2012, he was also Deputy Minister for Development and Competition with responsibility for the Merchant Navy in Loukas Papadimos' cabinet . In February 2012 he resigned from all party offices, from his ministerial office and from his parliamentary mandate in protest against his LAOS party's abstention from voting on the EU and IMF's austerity and reform package. Georgiadis deviated from the LAOS party line and voted "Yes".

Georgiadis moved to Nea Dimokratia in February 2012 and was elected as a member of parliament in the elections in May 2012, June 2012, January 2015, September 2015 and July 2019. After his election victory, Mitsotakis made Georgiadis his first deputy.

Georgiadis has been Minister for Economic Development and Investment since July 9, 2019.

Political views and political work

Georgiadis represents liberal views and is a firm supporter of the EU and IMF's austerity and reform course. His strict support for the reform program, which is commonly known in Greece as a memorandum , earned him a lot of open antipathy, but also sympathy. He often referred to himself in a deliberately provocative manner as the most loyal to the memorandum .

As Minister for the Merchant Navy, Georgiadis initiated numerous business-friendly reforms, including the lifting of cabotage restrictions . As Minister of Health, between 2013 and 2015, he reduced the annual budget of his department from 7.4 billion to 5.4 billion euros, but despite the strict austerity measures, introduced a law that guaranteed free medical care to everyone who had lost their health insurance provided around EUR 200 million in budget funds for this purpose.
