Miltiadis Varvitsiotis ( Greek Μιλτιάδης Βαρβιτσιώτης , born June 21, 1969 in Athens ) is a Greek lawyer and politician of the Nea Dimokratia (ND), who was Minister for Merchant Shipping and the Aegean from 2013 to 2015.

Life

After attending school, Varvitsiotis completed a law degree at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a postgraduate degree in international relations at Harvard University . After completing his studies, he took up a position as a lawyer.

In the election of April 8, 2000 , he was elected member of parliament for the first time as a candidate for the New Democracy for the constituency of Athens 2 (Vouli ton Ellinon Βουλή των Ελλήνων) and has been a member since then. Immediately after the election, he was elected Secretary of Parliament.

Within the party leadership of the ND, he was chairman of the section for the merchant navy from 2001 to 2004 and then from 2004 to 2007 the section for development. He has also been a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe since 2004 and, until 2011, of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Western European Union .

During his parliamentary membership, Varvitsiotis served as a deputy member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense between 2006 and 2007, of which he chaired between September 2007 and January 2009.

In January 2009, Varvitsiotis was appointed Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs by Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis . As such, he was responsible for economic diplomacy and international development support until October 2009, making him one of the closest collaborators of the then Foreign Minister Dora Bakogianni . He was then again chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense from July 2012 to June 2013.

On June 25, 2013, Prime Minister Andonis Samaras appointed him to succeed Kostis Mousouroulis as Minister for Merchant Shipping and the Aegean in his cabinet , to which he was a member until January 25, 2015. Since February 2015 he has been responsible for the secretariat for strategic planning and the political party program in the ND party leadership. He is also a member of the Parliament's Standing Committee on Production and Trade.
