Adrianus Turnebus

Adrianus Turnebus , French: Adrien (de) Turnèbe (* 1512 in Les Andelys , Normandy ; † June 12, 1565 in Paris ) was a French humanist and philosopher . He was one of the most important French scholars in the mid- 16th century .

Turnebus was sent to Paris when he was twelve, where he studied philosophy at the Sorbonne . Later he was appointed professor of belles-lettres at the University of Toulouse . From 1547 until his death he held the chair of Greek at the Collège de France . Turnebus published excellent editions by Aeschylus (1552), Sophocles, and other ancient authors. His son Odet de Turnèbe (1552–1581) was the author of "Les Contents", an amusing comedy with a moralizing undertone.
