Aegidius Romanus

Aegidius Romanus OESA ( Aegidius of Rome , nickname "doctor fundatissimus" ; * around 1243 in Rome , † December 22, 1316 in Avignon ) was an Augustinian hermit and an important student of Thomas Aquinas .

Life

In secundum librum sententiarum quaestiones , 1581

Almost nothing is known about his early years. Aegidius was born in Rome and probably came from a humble background. Its alleged descent from the well-known urban Roman family Colonna is only assumed in later sources, contemporary evidence is lacking. For some time he was a pupil of Thomas Aquinas and studied at the convent of the Augustinian order in Paris . In connection with the Paris convictions , Aegidius left Paris and soon rose to the rank of Augustinian. In 1285 he acted as vicar of his order, from 1292 to 1295 even as general of the order . He also taught again from 1285 to 1291 at the University of Paris . In 1295 he was appointed Archbishop of Bourges . In the period that followed, he repeatedly interfered in current debates. So he supported the French King Philip the Fair in his conflict with the Knights Templar (see Templar Trial ). Aegidius died in 1316 at the papal curia in Avignon .

Aegidius' writings cover a wide range of topics and range from scholastic philosophy to theology. In addition to several commentaries on Aristotle's works and treatises on the Bible, he wrote a prince's mirror De regimine principum for Philip the Fair, which was very influential in the Middle Ages . Around 1270 he wrote a treatise under the title Errores philosophorum ("The errors of the philosophers"), the 12th chapter of which is devoted to a refutation of Maimonides ' views in the Leader of the Undecided . In the journalistic dispute between Pope Boniface VIII and Philip, he stood on the side of the Pope and wrote the church policy treatise De ecclesiastica potestate in 1302 , the content of which was incorporated into the Bull Unam Sanctam . Some of his students, including Jakob von Viterbo , followed up on these considerations. In theological works he is often referred to as "doctor fundatissimus" .
