Aeonium urbicum is a species of the genus Aeonium in the thick-leaf family(Crassulaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

Aeonium urbicum grows as a perennial , not branched or rarely not very branched, monocarpic subshrub and reaches heights of up to 2 meters. The bald, young, rough, reticulated, ascending shoots have a diameter of up to 6 centimeters. Their rather flat rosettes reach a diameter of 15 to 32 centimeters. The obovate or lanceolate, cucumber or green, almost bald or finely downy-haired leaves are 8 to 22 inches long, 3 to 5.5 inches wide and 0.4 to 0.7 inches thick. They are pointed towards the tip. The base is wedge-shaped. The edge of the leaf is covered with more or less straight eyelashes that are 0.5 to 1 millimeter long. The leaves are differently reddish variegated .

Generative characteristics

The dome-shaped inflorescence has a length of 15 to 75 centimeters and a width of 10 to 45 centimeters. The inflorescence stalk is 3 to 15 inches long. The eight- to ten-fold flowers are on a 2 to 6 millimeter long, thrusting flower stalk . Their sepals are bare. The whitish, sometimes reddish variegated, lanceolate, pointed petals are 7 to 10 millimeters long and 1.2 to 2 millimeters wide. The stamens are bare.

Systematics and distribution

Aeonium urbicum is widespread in Tenerife at heights of up to 1900 meters.

The first description as Sempervivum urbicum by Jens Wilken Hornemann was published in 1819. Philip Barker Webb and Sabin Berthelot put the species in the genus Aeonium in 1841 .
