The major Chilean airport, Aeropuerto Internacional Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez, is the country's most important airport. It is located in Santiago de Chile in the district of Pudahuel . Mostly he is referred to by the name Aeropuerto de Pudahuel .

history

In 1961, the construction of the Aeropuerto Pudahuel began to replace the old Aeropuerto de Los Cerrillos . The airport was opened on February 9, 1967. In 1994 it received a new international terminal. The complete move from the old buildings to one of the most modern terminals in South America took place in 2001.

On March 19, 1980, the airport was given its current name Arturo Merino Benítez . He was the first commander of the Chilean Air Force Fuerza Aérea de Chile and founder of the Chilean airline LAN Airlines .

Since July 7, 1998, SCL Terminal Aéreo de Santiago has had a 15-year concession to operate the airport. In 2013 the concession was extended for two years, then it was taken over by Nuevo Pudahuel SA , formed from Groupe ADP (45%), VINCI Airports (40%) and Astaldi Concessioni (15%), which will be the airport until 2035 will operate. Air traffic control is subject to the Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil .

In 2014 there was a discussion about renaming the airport to Aeropuerto Internacional Pablo Neruda . Pablo Neruda was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. However, this project was never put into concrete terms, as the name change would have been too expensive according to a report by the Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil .

Pudahuel is the home airport and the most important hub of the Chilean-Brazilian LATAM Airlines, which emerged in 2016 from the merger between the national Chilean airline LAN and the Brazilian TAM Airlines . There are destinations mainly in South America, but also in Central and North America as well as Europe. Like the predecessor company LAN, LATAM Airlines flies daily from Santiago via Madrid to Frankfurt am Main . Five European airlines fly to Santiago de Chile: Air France flies to Paris without stopping , Alitalia flies the route directly to Rome and Iberia , in cooperation with LATAM, also flies non-stop from Madrid to Santiago. KLM also flies to Santiago de Chile in cooperation with Air France from Amsterdam with a stopover in Buenos Aires . British Airways has also been flying from London to Santiago and back since January 3, 2017 .

Airport expansion

Since the airport has far exceeded its maximum passenger capacity for years, work is currently underway on the expansion of the airport. The passenger capacity is to be increased to 30 million passengers annually with a potential of 45 million passengers annually. To this end, a 250,000 square meter terminal is to be built exclusively for international flights. This will significantly increase the total number of gates, the current 18 will be increased to 67 gates. The current terminal will therefore only be used for domestic flights. The number of parking spaces is to be increased from 3730 to 5800. The project should be completed in 2020.
