Afaf Ibrahim Meleis

Afaf Ibrahim Meleis (born March 19, 1942 ) is an Egyptian - American nursing researcher , medical sociologist and professor of nursing science .

Her professional interests focus on women's health, immigrant health care , international health care and the theoretical advancement of nursing science.

Live and act

Meleis graduated in 1961 her studies in nursing at the University of Alexandria with summa cum laude and left Egypt to her education at the University of California, Los Angeles continuing. There she completed a degree in nursing with an MS in 1964, followed by an MA in sociology in 1966 . In 1968 she received her doctorate in the field of medical and social psychology . She received American citizenship on February 25, 1975 .

After completing her doctorate, she taught at the University of California in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and became a professor in both public health and nursing sciences. In 2002 Meleis was appointed professor of nursing and sociology and dean of the nursing faculty at the University of Pennsylvania . There she also heads the WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing and Midwifery Leadership . She is the Vice President of the International Council on Women's Health Issues . As a visiting professor, she has given lectures in Southeast Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

Cooperation and memberships

Meleis is a member of the Royal College of Nursing in the United Kingdom , the American Academy of Nurses and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and the Institute of Medicine , the Forum of Executive Women and the Pennsylvania Women's Forum . She is also a trustee of the National Health Museum and a board member of CARE , the Global Health Council and the Life Science Career Alliance. In 2008 she was a board member of the Nurses Education Fund . Meleis is the international ambassador for the Girl Child Initiative of the International Council of Nurses .

Publications

Meleis has published more than 200 articles in sociological, nursing, and medical journals and a number of other monographs and other publications. Her 1985 book "Theoretical Nursing: Development and Progress" (German: Pflegetheorie: Subject, development and perspectives of theoretical thinking in nursing ) is considered a standard work in nursing science and research and was published in 2006 in the 4th edition. Other writings she has published are, for example, "Women's Work, Health, and Quality of Life." (2001) and "Caring for Women Cross-Culturally" (2002).
