The Afghan Whigs is a soul music- influenced American rock band from Cincinnati , Ohio .
Band history
Greg Dulli (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick McCollum (guitar), John Curley (bass), and Steve Earle (drums) formed the band in Cincinnati in late 1986.
The Afghan Whigs emerged from Greg Dulli's band The Black Republicans , to which John Curley joined. After the Black Republicans disbanded, Curley played with Rick McCollum. Dulli moved to Arizona, where he wrote half of the songs for the first album Big Top Halloween , which was released in 1988 on his own label Ultrasuede.
In 1989 The Afghan Whigs signed a contract with Sub Pop in Seattle . This made them the first US band in Sub Pop that did not come from the Northwest of the USA. The band later switched to the major label Elektra Records , which released their album Gentlemen in 1993. The singles Debonair and Gentlemen have been played on MTV and College Radio . The title Fountain and Fairfax also ran in the TV series My So-Called Life in 1994.
In 1996, the singer Greg Dulli produced the soundtrack for the film Beautiful Girls by Ted Demme , in the The Afghan Whigs occur as a band in a bar. The soundtrack also featured two covers of the Afghan Whigs: Frederick Knights Be for Real and Barry Whites Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe .
The Afghan Whigs announced their separation in 2001, giving the reason that the band members lived far apart. Since then, the former members have been active in separate music projects, with Greg Dulli in particular still releasing and touring albums that have been recognized worldwide with frequently changing collaborators under the name "The Twilight Singers" and with Mark Lanegan as The Gutter Twins .
In 2006, The Afghan Whigs reunited for a short time. The Afghan Whigs went on tour again in 2012 and released two more cover versions, "See And Don't See" (Marie Queenie Lyons) and Lovecrimes ( Frank Ocean ), which once again underlined their roots in soul and black music. After the successful live reunion and a highly acclaimed performance with Usher at the SXSW Festival 2013, work began on the band's first studio album since 1998. "Do To The Beast" was released on April 14, 2014 in Europe and the day after in the US.
style
The lyrics more often revolved around topics such as mental instability, drugs, sexual desire and latent violence. The arrangements of the pieces were based on grunge , while Dulli's expressive singing style made use of forms of expression of soul . The dramaturgy of the pieces is often based on a strong dynamic, densely arranged and impetuous refrains alternate with quieter stanzas. Another characteristic of the later Afghan Whigs pieces is the use of cello and other strings.
