africa action / Germany eV (africa action) is a charitable aid organization based in Bergheim , recognized as a non-profit organization , which works primarily for the disabled in Africa , especially for the blind and those with eye disorders. It emerged in 2003 from the ghana action association , which was founded in 1983 by Walter J. Zielniok for a project in Ghana .

The association only supports self-help projects by local groups such as recognized non-governmental organizations , parishes and local churches. On May 12th, 2009 Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul took over the patronage of africa action.

The association supports the Vision 2020 program of the World Health Organization , which was launched in 1999 and aims to overcome medically preventable blindness in the world by 2020 . The organization supports projects in Ethiopia , Benin , Burkina Faso , Gambia , Ghana , Cameroon , Kenya , Congo , Malawi , Mali , Niger , Tanzania , Togo and Uganda . One focus is on the countries of the Sahel zone , which, according to the human development index, are among the most underdeveloped countries in the world. The projects in the Sahel, including five eye centers, are the responsibility of the “Freundeskreis Wiesbaden”, which was founded in 1999 by Werner Bardenhewer .

The work focuses on:

  • Help in preventing blindness, in the eye health service and in providing visual aids
  • Promotion of eye centers, construction of outpatient eye stations and support in the construction of eye clinics
  • Support for disabled and training facilities
  • Promotion of the training of African skilled workers

The registered association is led by a volunteer working board , the one also volunteer acting consultant circle stands aside. In 2009 the association had around 270 members in Europe and Africa, including over 40 associations and groups as corporate members or action groups. They run the office with their contributions. More than 3500 other individuals and groups in Germany support certain partnership projects in circles of friends and action groups.

Cooperation partners support the projects financially and in an advisory capacity, such as the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development , Misereor , action medeor , missio , Senior Expert Service , Christoffel-Blindenmission , German Catholic Association for the Blind , German Committee for the Prevention of Blindness , Aviation Without Borders , Caritas International and since 2008 light for the world .

The association has been awarded the DZI seal of approval every year since 1994 .

Foundation "See Further"

The foundation “Weitersehen” is a foundation in the trust of the association. It was founded in 2002 by Jürgen Rüttgers , Willy Trapp , Christoph Binger and Walter J. Zielniok. The purpose of the foundation is to help people with eye disorders and the handicapped in Africa and to train local specialists for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of blind and other handicapped people as part of development cooperation.
