African Energy Commission

The African Energy Commission ( Afrec for short ) is an organ of the African Union that aims to promote the development of the African energy market. The chairman of the commission is the Sudanese Rashid Ali Abdallah .

history

Back in Lagos Plan ( Lagos Plan of Action ) 1980 designated African heads of state, the bad power supply on the African continent as a constraint to the development of Africa and called for the establishment of an international Energy Commission. In the 1990s, efforts to establish such a commission at the continental level became more concrete. At the 63rd ordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Organization for African Unity in 1996, the establishment of Afrec was confirmed as a goal and its early implementation was initiated. At a conference of energy experts to found the African Energy Commission in Cairo in May 2000 , a draft for the Afrec's founding agreement was drawn up. The concrete steps for founding the African Energy Commission were worked out at a conference of energy ministers in April 2001 and finally confirmed on July 11, 2001 at a summit meeting of the heads of state.

After a sufficient number of states had ratified the agreement, the Afrec, headquartered in Algiers , began its work on February 17, 2008 following a decision by the Conference of Energy Ministers.

  • Training of suitable workers for the energy sector
