Their variable, stiff, linear to lanceolate, runny, green to yellow-colored leaves are 50 to 80 cm long and 3 to 4 cm wide. The leaf margins are serrated. The dark brown to gray terminal mandrel is 2.5 to 4 cm long.

The paniculate, narrow inflorescence becomes 3 to 5 m high. The green to yellow colored flowers are 40 to 55 mm long and appear in the upper area of the inflorescence and reach to the tip, on irregularly arranged, small branches. The funnel-shaped flower tube is 5 to 10 mm long.

The elongated three-chamber capsule fruits are 35 to 40 mm long and 15 to 20 mm wide. The black seeds are up to 7 mm long and 6 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from September to December.

Systematics and distribution

Agave datylio is widespread in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur and is found mainly in sandy and granite soils in the Cape region. It is associated with cacti and succulent species.

The first description by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber was published in 1902.

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Agave datylio var. Datylio
  • Agave datylio var. Vexans (Trel.) IMJohnst.

Agave datylio is a member of the Rigidae group . It belongs to the widespread sword-leaf group. The species of agave actites , which is found on the opposite side of the Gulf of California , is the geographically closest member of the group, although it differs in shape, leaf and flower structure. Agave datylio is grown in the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix .
