Systematics and distribution

Agave havardiana is found in the southwestern United States in New Mexico and Texas and in Mexico in the states of Coahuila and Chihuahua in various soil formations on stony slopes, in grass and woodland and in mountainous regions at 1200 to 2000 m altitude. It is associated with numerous types of succulents and cacti.

The first description by William Trelease was published in 1912.

Agave havardiana is a representative of the Parryanae section . It is characterized within the group by the differentiated leaf and flower structure. The species is closely related to Agave parryi , but there are differences in leaf structure. Agave havardiana is grown at Ruth Bancroft Garden in California. It can withstand periods of frost down to minus 18 ° C when it is dry.
