Flowers of Agave parryi var. Couesii

Agave parryi is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ) and a representative of short stature Agave group Parryanae . The distribution area extends from central Arizona to Mexico .

description

Agave parryi grows individually or forms large, compact groups. The plant appears as a spherical structure with heights of 20 to 30 cm and 30 to 80 cm in diameter.

The smooth and stiff leaves are green to gray, 20 to 30 cm long, 15 to 20 mm wide and are arranged variably. Their shape is linear or lanceolate to oval and curved upwards. The leaves have a pointed and strong, gray to brown terminal spine. The fibrous, red-brown leaf margins are irregularly serrated near the base.

The panicle inflorescence becomes 3 to 5 m high. In the upper half it forms 12 to 15 irregularly long branches. The yellow to orange flowers appear at the end of the branches and are 60 to 75 mm long.

The egg-shaped to elongated three-chamber capsule fruits are 35 to 50 mm long and 15 to 20 mm wide. The black, irregularly shaped seeds are 7 to 8 mm long and 5 to 6 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

distribution

Agave parryi is distributed from central Arizona and southwest New Mexico in the United States to Mexico in the states of Chihuahua and Durango . The species grows on stony slopes, in grasslands , in open woodlands at an altitude of 1500 to 2500 m. It is associated with a variety of cacti and succulent species.

Systematics

The first description by George Engelmann was published in 1875. One of the numerous synonyms is Agave applanata var. Parryi (Engelm.) Mulford (1896).

The subspecies and varieties differ in size, leaf and flower structure. Two subspecies and three varieties are distinguished:

  • Agave parryi subsp. parryi : It occurs from southeastern Arizona to southwestern New Mexico and in Mexico.
  • Agave parryi subsp. neomexicana (Wooton & Standl.) B.Ullrich : It occurs from southern New Mexico to western Texas and Mexico.
  • Agave parryi var. Couesii (Engelm. Ex Trel.) Kearney & Peebles : It occurs in central Arizona. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 120.
  • Agave parryi var. Huachucensis (Baker) Little : It occurs from southeastern Arizona to Mexico.
  • Agave parryi var. Truncata Gentry : It occurs only in Mexico.

The subspecies parryi and neomexicana and the variety couesii can survive periods of frost down to minus 20 ° C when dry.

Hybrids with Agave chrysantha and Agave schottii are known. Agave havardiana is closely related, although differences in leaf structure can be seen.
