Agave karwinskii is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ).

description

Agave karwinskii grows individually and forms a trunk of 2 to 3 m. It forms runners. The variable, stiff, linear to lanceolate green leaves are 40 to 65 cm long and 3 to 7 cm wide. The leaf margins are serrated. The dark brown end thorn is 1.5 to 4 cm long.

The paniculate, open, straight inflorescence is 3 to 3.5 m high. The green to yellow flowers are 45 to 57 mm long and appear in the upper area of ​​the inflorescence and reach the tip, on loose, few, irregularly arranged branches. The flower tube is 10 to 11 mm long.

The egg-shaped to elongated three-chamber capsule fruits are 40 to 50 mm long and 25 to 30 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from July to August.

Systematics and distribution

Agave karwinskii grows in Mexico in the states of Puebla , Oaxaca and Veracruz in arid regions at an altitude of 1550 to 1850 m. It is associated with cacti and succulent species.

The first description by Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini was published in 1833. Synonyms are Agave laxa Salm-Dyck , Agave karwinskiana Herbert , Agave corderoyi Baker and Agave bakeri Ross .

Agave karwinskii is a representative of the Rigidae group . Typical is the high trunk-shaped growth with relatively small leaves and flowers. It is similar to Agave decipiens , but there are differences in leaf and flower structure.

Agave karwinskii is grown in the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California.
