Agave margaritae is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Magdalena Island Agave".
description
Agave margaritae forms small rosettes with sparse runners. The oval to broadly lanceolate, thick, fleshy, variably arranged, light yellow-green, tapering leaves are 10 to 25 cm long and 7 to 10 cm wide. The leaf margins are variably toothed and form a brown horny edge. The strong, brown to gray terminal spine is 2 to 3 cm long.
The panicle inflorescence becomes 2 to 3.5 m high. The light yellow flowers are 45 to 50 mm long and appear on the upper half of the inflorescence on loose, variably arranged branches. The flower tube is 14 to 10 mm long.
The elongated three-chamber capsule fruits are 3 to 5 cm long and 1.5 to 2 cm wide. The black, variably shaped seeds are 4 to 5 mm long and 0.5 mm thick.
The flowering period extends from June to July.
Systematics and distribution
Agave margaritae grows in Mexico in Baja California Sur on the islands of Magdalena ( where the type was found ) and Santa Margarita . It is associated with Echinocereus barthelowanus .
The first description by Townshend Stith Brandegee was published in 1889. A synonym is Agave connochaetoden Trel.
Agave margaritae is a representative of the Deserticolae section . It is characterized by the differentiated leaf and flower structure among the species native to Baja California . The species is related to Agave vizcainoensis . Agave margaritae is grown in the Huntington Botanic Garden in San Marino, California.
