Agave ocahui is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Ocahui, Amolillo Agave".

description

Agave ocahui grows individually with a short trunk. The dense rosettes are 30 to 50 cm high and 50 to 100 cm wide. The green, linear, lanceolate, ascending, variably arranged, pointed, dotted leaves are 25 to 50 cm long and 1.5 to 2.5 cm wide. The leaf margins are smooth. The gray end thorn becomes 1 to 2 cm long.

The year-old straight to curved, narrow inflorescence is 2 to 3 m high. The yellow flowers are 35 to 50 mm long and appear on the lower part to the tip of the inflorescence on the variably arranged branches. The broad, funnel-shaped flower tube is 2 to 4 mm long.

The elongated brown three-chamber capsule fruits are 12 to 15 mm long and 7 to 8 mm wide. The black, variably shaped seeds are 2.5 to 3 mm long and 1.5 to 1.7 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from May to June.

Systematics and distribution

Agave ocahui grows in the state of Sonora in Mexico on volcanic slopes, in grasslands and open woodlands at an altitude of 500 to 1400 m.

The first description by Gentry was published in 1972.

Agave ocahui is a member of the Amolae group and grows widely scattered in the northeast of the state of Sonora . It can hardly be distinguished from agave pelona in its habitus in its youth stage , but the differences in leaf and flower structure of adult specimens become clear. Due to the leaf and flower structure, Agave ocahui is related to Agave vilmoriniana and Agave chrysoglossa . Individuals can be found in the University of California Botanical Gardens.

Agave ocahui can withstand short periods of frost down to −8 ° C when it is dry.
