description

Agave subsimplex grows singly or sprouts. The small, low spread rosettes reach heights of growth of 20 to 35 cm and a diameter of 50 to 75 cm. The variable, thick, rigid, gray, yellow to light green colored, lanceolate to egg-shaped leaves are 12 to 35 cm long and 3 to 5 cm wide. The leaf margins are serrated flexibly. The gray end thorn is 2 to 4 cm long.

The paniculate, slender inflorescence is 2 to 3.5 m high. The yellow to pink colored flowers are 40 to 45 mm long and appear on the upper part of the inflorescence on small, few, irregularly arranged branches. The flower tube is 3 to 4 mm.

The variably shaped three-chamber capsule fruits are 15 to 40 mm long and 10 to 35 mm wide. The black seeds are up to 4.5 mm long and up to 3 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from May to July.

Systematics and distribution

Agave subsimplex grows in Mexico in the state of Sonora on stony slopes in coastal regions up to 250 m in height. It is associated with succulent and cactus species.

The first description by Trel. was published in 1911 (1912 publ.).

Agave subsimplex is a member of the Deserticolae group , which is characterized by narrow, variable leaves, slender inflorescences and the tubular structure. It grows in a limited area on the coast and near Tiburon. The species is related to the Deserticolae members Agave deserti and Agave cerulata , but differences in shape, leaf and flower structure are recognizable. Agave subsimplex is grown at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson .
