Agave tenuifolia is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Weeping Agave".

description

Agave tenuifolia forms dense groups through rhizomatous branches. The open rosettes are loosely arranged. The thin, bendable, falling, longitudinally striped, green, lancet-shaped, variably arranged leaves are 30 to 90 cm long and 0.5 to 1.5 cm wide. The horny leaf margins are finely toothed. The brown to reddish end thorn is 0.5 to 1 cm long.

The annual, straight inflorescence is 1 to 2.5 m high. The yellow to green colored flowers are 23 to 30 mm long and appear in pairs on the upper part of the inflorescence. The flower tube is 12 to 15 mm long.

The spherical to egg-shaped three-chambered capsule fruits are up to 10 mm long. The moon-shaped, black seeds are up to 3 mm long and 2 mm wide.

Systematics and distribution

Agave tenuifolia grows in Mexico, in the states of Tamaulipas and Querétaro, on limestone slopes in woodland, at an altitude of 450 to 1500 m.

The first description by Sergio Zamudio and Emiliano Sánchez Martinez was published in 1995.

Agave tenuifolia is a representative of the Striatae section . It differs from the other representatives of the section due to the special leaf and flower structure. Characteristic are the open rosettes with the thin, falling, flexible, longitudinally striped, variably arranged leaves. The species is related to Agave striata , which however differs in size, leaf and flower structure.
