Agave virginica is a species of the agave genus( Agave ) in the subfamily of the agave family (Agavoideae). The specific epithet virginica comes from Latin and refers to occurrence of the species in Virginia .

description

Agave virginica grows with rhizomes 1 to 2.5 (rarely up to 5) centimeters long and 1 to 2.3 (rarely up to 2.5) centimeters wide. The numerous roots are fleshy. The approximately 10 semi-succulent leaves are inverted lanceolate to linear-lanceolate and spread out. They are 12 to 15 (rarely up to 30) centimeters long and 1 to 4.5 centimeters wide, usually a uniform green with red spots and lines near the base.

The 0.7 to 1.9 (rarely 2.1) meter high inflorescence bears 10 to 44 (rarely 61) upright green single flowers over a length of 14 to 68 centimeters , which stand together tightly together.

The spherical fruits are 1 to 1.8 (rarely 2.5) centimeters long and 1 to 1.7 centimeters wide.

Systematics and distribution

Agave virginica is common in the southern and eastern United States . The plants grow in wooded areas on rocky and sandy soils. Agave virginica is the only species of the Manfreda subgenus that also occurs in temperate climates . She is assigned to the Manfreda group.

The first scientific description was published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . Nomenclatory synonyms are Manfreda virginica (L.) Rose (1899) and Polianthes virginica (L.) Shinners (1966).
