John Walter Grant MacEwan , OC , AOE (born August 12, 1902 in Brandon , Manitoba , † June 15, 2000 in Calgary , Alberta ) was a Canadian politician, publicist and agronomist. 1963 to 1965 he was mayor of Calgary, from 1966 to 1974 lieutenant governor of the province of Alberta.

biography

MacEwan attended schools in Brandon and Melfort . He then studied at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in agricultural science . He finished his studies in 1926 at the University of Toronto . Two years later he received his Masters degree from Iowa State College . In 1935 he married Phyllis W. Cline. The marriage produced a daughter.

Between 1928 and 1946 MacEwan worked at the University of Saskatchewan as a professor of animal husbandry and director of the agricultural school. From 1946 to 1951 he was dean at the University of Manitoba . During his academic career, he excelled as editor of the Canadian Cattleman and The Western Producer . He has also written several articles for the Farm and Ranch Review . From 1936 onwards he wrote books that were mainly devoted to his scientific field and the history of Western Canada .

MacEwan's political career began in 1951 when he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons in the Brandon constituency . In 1955 he won a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for the Alberta Liberal Party in Calgary . From 1958 he was chairman of this party, but resigned in 1960 after losing the election. After serving on the Calgary City Council from 1953 to 1958, he was elected mayor in 1963. He held this office for two years.

At the suggestion of Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson MacEwan was on 6 January 1966 by Governor General Georges Vanier for lieutenant governor appointed the province of Alberta. He was proposed a second time for this office and held it until his successor was appointed on July 2, 1974. After that office, he served as chairman of the Men's Canadian Club of Calgary .

Between 1966 and 1974, MacEwan was awarded honorary doctorates from five different universities , each time in the field of law. In 1975 he received the Order of Canada , ten years later the Premier's Award For Excellence . A college and an elementary school are named after him.

Grant MacEwan died in Calgary on June 15, 2000. He was buried there in the Union cemetery.
