Gordon Towers

Thomas Gordon Towers , AOE (born July 5, 1919 in Red Deer , Alberta , † June 8, 1999 ibid) was a Canadian politician. He was Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Alberta from 1991 to 1996 .

biography

After Towers finished his school career, he trained as a farmer . He married Doris R. Nicholson on December 27, 1940, with whom he had five children. Between 1956 and 1957 Towers served as chairman of the River Glen Home and School Association , and in the 1960s he assumed three other presidencies of Canadian organizations.

In both 1963 and 1965, Towers ran unsuccessfully for the lower house constituency of his hometown. In the 1972 general election , however, he prevailed and won this seat for the Progressive Conservative Party . In 1974, 1979, 1980 and 1984 he was re-elected. During his time as a member of parliament, he was a member of various commissions.

In 1989, Towers was named Citizen of the Year by his hometown Chamber of Commerce. Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn appointed him lieutenant governor of the Province of Alberta on March 11, 1991. Towers held this office until April 17, 1996. He died on June 8, 1999 in Red Deer and was buried in the local cemetery.
