The painter was close friends with the poet Rainer Malkowski for decades .

Artistic creation

The painter himself classifies his work in classical modernism . The framework for Tomschiczek's artistic creativity is formed by the laws of painting: For him, mastering form, color and composition is a basic requirement for good pictures.

At Tomschiczek, the impulses for his works come mainly from experiencing nature: landscapes, the sea, animals, plants. In the last decades mainly from the karst landscape of the Croatian islands Cres and Lošinj as well as from his trips to West Africa (Senegal, Gambia, Burkina Faso and others). This is how series of pictures and motifs such as: 'In the Karst', 'Gatterweg', 'Macchiatisch', 'Pictures from the Sea', 'Senegambia', 'Upper Volta' emerged. The works from the early years of creativity such as the landscape watercolors of the Mediterranean region or the still lifes clearly show the derivation of the representational, for example in the motif series table pictures, box pictures, figure pictures, nature morte. In the later work, the content seems to be more and more non-representational for the viewer.

"Tomschiczek's abstraction does not mean detachment from nature. It is transformation and condensation." (Quote from Rainer Malkowski ). Peter Tomschiczek said: "I look for the real in things, the outside is not enough for me". Today Tomschiczek mainly paints large format pictures using mixed media on canvas, but also series of small format pictures also using mixed media on paper. The surface structure of a picture is an essential means of expression for him. In addition to colors, he therefore integrates materials such as earth, sand or feathers in the painting process and thus strengthens the relationship to nature. The resulting three-dimensional structures result in desired light and shadow effects in the pictures.

The accompanying graphic work of the artist consists of numerous lithographs, etchings, drawings - also illustrations of children's books and aquatint works.

The artist's early painterly work is characterized by watercolors, collages, and oil paintings (still lifes, landscapes, isolated portraits).
