Agios Pavlos

Agios Pavlos ( Greek Άγιος Παύλος ( m. Sg. ) 'Saint Paul') is the name of several places in Greece . A better known town with this name is located on the south coast of the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete . It belongs to the local community Saktouria of the municipality of Agios Vasilios and is located 27 kilometers southeast of the village of Spili . It had 27 registered residents in 2011.

Agios Pavlos can be reached via a road that branches off at Nea Krya Vrysi from the main road from Spili to Agia Galini towards the south. Coming from the direction of Spili, the approximately 13-kilometer serpentine road begins on the right just after Nea Krya Vrysi and leads through the village of Saktouria .

Agios Pavlos is a quiet place with a few taverns that also rent rooms. The bay of Agios Pavlos is visited daily by excursion boats from Agia Galini during the season. The beach of the bay consists of dark sand with dune-like drifts. The entry into the water is not without danger because of the slippery rock slabs.

Cape Melissa , west of the bay, is also called the 'crocodile' because of its silhouette from the point of view of Agios Pavlos. Above today's sea level, the approx. 1.5 meter high, darker old waterline at the 'mouth' of the 'crocodile' can be seen on its rocks: Here you can clearly see that the island of Crete was in the 4th century AD. lowered in the east and raised in the west . As a geological peculiarity, the rock formation of a rock fold (diplóno pétris) is located on the back of the 'crocodile' . Different colored layers of rock form a wavy striped pattern.

Behind the sand dune at Cape Melissa begins a long, largely untouched sandy beach that leads to the rocks of Triopetra . From the dune, the view extends to the northwest to the Preveli monastery and the striking Megalopotamos river inlet at its mouth, the palm beach of Preveli .

Another place with this name is located in the northwest of Crete, approx. 25 km southeast of the regional capital Chania .

On the southwest coast of Crete, east of the Samaria Gorge , along the European long-distance hiking trail E4, on the beach of the Libyan Sea, there is a church with the name Agios Pavlos.
