Aimable Hageau , sometimes Amable Hageau , (born June 16, 1756 in Anguilcourt-le-Sart , died September 12, 1836 in Clamecy (Nièvre) ) was a French hydraulic engineer in the service of Napoleon Bonaparte .

Life

Hageau was born in 1756 in Anguilcourt-le-Sart in northern France, the son of farmers. After elementary school, Hageau went to live with an older brother in Soissons at the age of 15 , where he worked as an administrative clerk. After a few years he decided to move to Paris and study there. He attended courses from the mathematician Antoine-René Mauduit . On Mauduit's recommendation, Hageau then worked in the office of the architect Jean-Rodolphe Perronet , who employed him in the construction of the Nivernais Canal (Canal du Nivernais). In 1784 Hageau received his engineering degree. Until 1803 he was mainly involved in the project of the Nivernais Canal. One of his greatest achievements was the structurally demanding Canal Tunnel at La Collancelle . After the work on the canal stopped, Hageau studied intensively and got to know the inspector general of the authority for bridge and road construction Émiland Gauthey , who recognized the talent of the young engineer and used him to expand the Doubs . Hageau built the Dole lock , which is considered a technical masterpiece.

In 1805 Hageau was promoted to chief engineer and employed in the construction of the Rhine-Rhône Canal (Canal du Rhône au Rhin), which was one of the largest canal construction projects at the time of Napoleon with a length of 237 km. In 1811 he was sent to the Jemappes department . The region around Mons ( Belgian since 1830 ) belonged to France after the First Coalition War . Hageau was involved in the construction of the Charleroi-Brussels canal and the canal from Mons to Condé (Canal de Mons à Condé). In 1808 he also built the only partially completed north canal (Grand Canal du Nord) and its connection to Obererft , the Epanchoir in Neuss . In 1812 he worked in the 8th inspection division of the authority for bridge and road construction.

In 1814 Hageau returned to Paris and was transferred to the management of the Rhine-Rhône Canal. At his own request, however, he was transferred to the 9th Inspection Division of the bridge and road construction authority. In 1818/19 the now experienced engineer built the 108 km long Ourcq Canal (Canal de l'Ourcq) and the only partially completed North Canal (Grand Canal du Nord). In 1820 Hageau was reassigned to the authority for bridge and road construction, but in the same year began planning the further construction of the Canal de Nivernais. After 1824 Hageau was a member of the Bridge and Road Construction Council. In this role he was involved in the planning of the Canal des Deux Mers and made numerous suggestions for improvement.

Hageau retired in 1830.

Hageau promenade

When the new Stadtpark Robend development area was built in Viersen on a conversion area east of Viersen train station , a bridge keeper's house for the north canal project was renovated . A canal-like water surface was created (see photo); the path on its western bank is called Hageau-Promenade .
