Airplane vs. Volcano is an American action film from 2014 by the film company The Asylum, which is best known for its low-budget films .

A passenger plane flies over the Hawaiian islands when suddenly several volcanoes emerge from the sea and erupt. The aircraft is wrapped in a cloud of ash and hit by flying rocks. Both the pilot and the copilot are killed. Flight attendant Rita is the first to notice this and first informs former soldier and private pilot Rick Pierce and Sky Marshal Jim Kirkland, who are among the passengers, about the incident. The aircraft flies in a circular orbit over the volcanoes because the pilot could no longer deactivate the PIN code-protected autopilot and only he and his co-pilot knew the combination. Pierce can only minimally influence the trajectory with great effort. Meanwhile, the paranoid-looking passenger Carlos Crieger discovers the dead pilots and spreads panic among the rest of the passengers. Kirkland succeeds in overpowering Crieger and trapping him in the on-board toilet.
When Rita tries to deactivate the autopilot using a hidden switch, she accidentally opens the fuel tank, whereupon the plane drains kerosene and little is left of it. Air passenger Landon Todd manages to establish contact with an army base on the ground using his tablet computer . He asks for help, which is initially refused because the surrounding islands are also affected by the volcanic eruptions and the military is to be deployed there first. At the base, the volcano expert Lisa Whitmore, a colleague of Landon Todd, is working on a strategy to stop volcanic activity and save the plane. The use of a tanker aircraft is called off, another rescue aircraft, which was supposed to take over the passengers, is hit by lava rock and crashes. Messages from passengers persuade the military to do everything to save them. A squadron of fighter planes is assigned to extinguish the main volcano by rocket fire, but this mission fails.
Meanwhile, Crieger breaks free on the plane and fatally injures Kirkland before he can be overpowered again. The army is now using a propeller plane, as it is less vulnerable in the clouds of ash than an airplane with jet engines. The crew of the rescue aircraft can bring the passengers into their aircraft using steel cables. The accident machine is prepared with explosives. The plan is to steer them into the main volcano and detonate them. While the other passengers are being rescued, Pierce is seriously injured by a piece of rubble and decides to sacrifice himself and steer the machine into the volcano himself. The propeller plane manages to turn off in time, and Pierce flies right into the volcano, whereupon there is a huge explosion.
