The worst films of all time (also abbreviated SchleFaZ [ ˈʃleːfat͡s ]) is a satirical film series of the private broadcaster Tele 5 . Mainly B-films , which are characterized by particularly bad design or involuntarily comical ideas, are presented by Oliver Kalkofe and Peter Rütten , annotated and presented. These films themselves are called Schlefaze .

Development of the format

In 2012, Oliver Kalkofe, the voice actor at Mystery Science Theater 3000 - The Film Was, developed the concept for the series together with Tele-5 broadcaster Kai Blasberg. Since the Tele München Gruppe owns a large number of B-films, e.g. B. the production company The Asylum , which had previously been broadcast on Tele 5, the idea matured to present it as trash television - deliberately differentiating it from the concepts of other broadcasters . The title of the show contrasts with the Kabel- Eins slogan “The best films of all time”.

The films are presented by the moderators as they are broadcast and provided with snappy comments, which are then cut in between.

Broadcast concept

As part of the program, films are presented that, according to the moderators, are considered particularly bad and therefore deserve special attention. One film is presented and examined in more detail for each broadcast.

At the beginning of each episode, the viewer is attuned to the film by the moderators. In addition, information about the actors, the director and other facts about the film are presented in a humorous way. In addition, a special cocktail is created or presented for each film, the composition or name of which is related to the film. In connection with this, a drinking game is usually introduced. So should z. For example, the audience of the film Sharknado drink a cocktail every time a flying shark is seen. During the film, background information on the respective scene is given in pop-ups or reminders of the drinking game. After the commercial breaks, the moderators ironically discuss particularly prominent scenes from the film. At the end of the film, what has been seen is summarized and provided with a conclusion. As the seasons progressed, it has become established that Kalkofe is the incorrigible enthusiast who can always gain an artistic touch from the films, while Rütten plays the perpetually pessimistic and disinterested viewer who almost invariably finds the film bad. The curse “Fickende Hölle!” Has established itself as Rütten's catch phrase .

In 13 German cinemas (as of February 2014) the SchleFaZ series is shown on the big screen at the same time as the TV broadcast. The summer episodes of season 3 were broadcast in parallel on Joiz Germany . The first films in the series were released on DVD in June 2015.

In March 2016, Tele 5 announced the extension by a fourth season, which includes twelve more programs in summer and four in the Advent season . The broadcast began on July 15, 2016, and the final four episodes were broadcast from December 2, 2016.

The first four films of the sixth season, which began on April 6, 2018 with the film Spiceworld - The Movie , were announced on February 23, 2018. Since all films are approved for ages 12 and over, the date has been brought forward from around 10:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

On August 3, 2018, the summer season began with the film King Kong vs. Godzilla . This season contained a total of 8 films.

The start of the Schlefaz winter season began on November 30, 2018 with the sixth and final part of the Sharknado series.

Reviews

Spiegel.de states that Tele 5 is “running a pretty smart campaign” with the worst films of all time, and describes the program as a step “to gain a profile extremely cheaply”. Thomas Lückerath from DWDL.de certified the series that "Tele 5 has succeeded in a cult program in the niche".

DVD release

In June and July 2015, four films from the first two seasons of the film series ( Sharknado , Bone Breaker in the Wild West , Onion Jack Tidies Up and Sumuru - The Daughter of Satan ) were released on DVD under the collective term #SchleFaZ . The Sharknado trilogy followed in July 2016 and, at the end of June 2017, both Hentai Kamen films and the film The Seven Men of Sumuru in a collector's box along with three films that had previously been released.

Trivia

  • Uwe Boll sent Tele 5 a video message on the occasion of the first season in which he thanked him for not showing any of his own films. After the first season, Boll suggested that his films be featured on the show, but Rütten and Kalkofe decided against it.
  • In Twitter is now a large fan base has formed the series, whereby the hashtag SchlefaZ is performed regularly at the Twitter trends.
  • In the 5th season, Peter Rütten performed his previous Top 5 of the most hated Schlefaz films during the broadcast on Hobgoblins: 1st place: Hobgoblins; 2nd place: Daniel, the magician; 3rd place: Me - a groupie; 4th place: Battlefield Earth; 5th place: Libero
  • Oliver Kalkofe stated in an interview with Peer Schader that the film Hercules was being discussed in New York for the show, but could not be shown on television because of Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto . On May 8, 2020, it was finally shown on Tele 5, but in the preliminary program of SchleFaZ .
  • The HanseMerkur insurance group has sponsored the SchleFaZ summer season since 2016. At the same time as the broadcast, the official account tweets, humorously comments on what has been seen from the insurance perspective and at the same time answers users' questions, which are often not very serious. The HanseMerkur news anchor (named Hansi Merkur by the community) has been answering individual user questions on TV and on Twitter since 2017.
