The Polyp - The beast with the arms of death (Original title: Tentacoli ) is an Italian animal horror film from 1977 . The film was directed by Ovidio G. Assonitis , who used the pseudonym Oliver Hellman for this, and was one of the many stragglers of Steven Spielberg's hit film Jaws . The film also ran under the alternative titles Attack from the Deep and Tentacles of Death .

A series of strange incidents take place off Solana Beach on the California coast: Ships are destroyed, people disappear without a trace and reappear a little later, completely disfigured. Journalist Ned Turner and oceanographer Will Gleason investigate and discover that a giant octopus is responsible for the mysterious incident. When all attempts to neutralize the giant octopus fail, Gleason decides to use two trained killer whales against the monster. The daring plan actually succeeds: the whales attack the octopus and kill it.

The visual effects come from GK Major, Joseph L. Mecacci was responsible as the make-up artist, the costumes were contributed by N. Hercules. The film was set in La Jolla , San Diego , California in the United States.
