action

In Afghanistan , the US Army, led by Captain Sturges, is fighting the Taliban when the terrorists are suddenly attacked and killed by giant spiders. A spider crawls unrecognized into the mouth of a fallen US soldier and ends up in a coffin in Arizona , where it multiplies rapidly. A little later, Captain Sturges landed in Arizona and carries out an arms delivery with Sergeant Shelly Underwood. A car accident forced them to stop their journey. Sheriff Beaumont arranges accommodation for them for the night and drives Sturges to Reba's restaurant. Meanwhile, several young people in the area are killed by giant spiders during a picnic and participants in an expedition are attacked by the animals. Two students and their friends manage to escape to an empty house, where one of the young men is killed by spiders the next morning. The three survivors escape into a nearby car, where another man is attacked by a spider and dies. The fate of women remains unexplained.

In Reba's restaurant, guests - in addition to Sturges and Sheriff Beaumont, two real estate sharks and a couple living in divorce with their daughter Hayley - soon find themselves facing numerous spiders. Sturges can alert Shelly, who appears in the army truck and drives away all guests and staff. The spiders follow the cart; Sturges' attempt to inform his superior about the monster spiders initially fails. The real estate sharks lead the truck to a plaster factory, where everyone is entrenched in a bunker-like structure. When the sheriff goes to smoke on the factory roof, he is killed by spiders. An attempt by Sturges and others to get to a delivery van not far from the factory fails because of the spiders in the basement. On the other hand, they cannot escape with the army truck because it is damaged as a result of the car accident.

Sturges succeeds in reporting the hopeless situation to his superior and proposing an area bombing. Then a group from the factory goes to the delivery truck, shooting their way free and soon no more spiders seem to be alive. Of those who stayed behind in the factory, two are too impatient: a real estate shark leaves the protective interior unarmed and is killed by spiders. The girl Hayley leaves the group because her father is one of the people who fought his way to the van and she wants to see him. She is rescued by Shelly, but one of the men has previously lost his life for Hayley. The rest of the people in the factory, including Hayley's mother, manage to escape to the van, with which the group can finally move away from the plasterer factory - just in time for the Army bombing. Some time later, the army is certain that they have killed the spiders. However, it turns out that the animals have already penetrated into new, more populated areas.

production

In Camel Spiders - Attack of the Monster Spiders , director Jim Wynorski used a real species of spider as a model for the mutated spiders in the film: cylinder spiders , colloquially known as camel spiders , actually live in dry areas such as, for example. B. Afghanistan, but are portrayed in the film greatly exaggerated in accordance with the popular opinion regarding size and behavior. Filming took about two weeks.

The film was produced for the television station Syfy and shown for the first time on March 4, 2011. Anchor Bay also released the film on DVD. The film was released on DVD in Germany on July 6, 2012. On August 1, 2014, Camel Spiders - attack of the monster spiders as part of the series The worst films of all times (SchleFaZ) on Tele 5 was also seen on German television, with commentary by Oliver Kalkofe and Peter Rütten . In this context, it was also shown once in various German cinemas.

criticism

"Unoriginal, quickly forgotten megaschund," summarized Cinema briefly, and found that executive producer Roger Corman "had B-frequent filmmaker Wynorski and his trash stars wade knee-deep in horror clichés." The film service saw the film as a "disaster thriller, which could be interpreted as an allegory on the American trauma of war and terrorism, it would not be so level in terms of form and content. "
