Location from Aitouia to Ptolemy

Aitouia , also Kistouia or Astouia and Astuia ( Greek  Αἰτουία ; Latin Aituia ) is a place name that Ptolemaios used in his Geographia (Ptolemaios 2, 11, 12) set of coordinates as one of those in northern Germania , near the Seaside places (πόλεις) with 37 ° 20 'longitude ( Ptolemaic degrees of longitude ) and 54 ° 30' latitude or 54 ° 30 'latitude. According to Ptolemy, Aitouia would lie between Kenennon and Aliso in the latter reading of latitude .

localization

So far the ancient place could not be located with certainty. An interdisciplinary research team led by Andreas Kleineberg, who re-examined and interpreted the Ptolemaic coordinates from 2006 to 2009, is currently locating Aitouia in the area of Stargard Castle in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The name Stargard comes from Slavic and means "old castle". In toponymic research, this place name is taken as an indication that a (fortified) place must have already existed when the Slavs arrived in this area. Stargard Castle is located on the linden tree , which flows into the Baltic Sea via the Tollense and the Peene , which is navigable from Demmin .
