Yakubu Aiyegbeni (born November 22, 1982 in Benin City ), called Yakubu , is a Nigerian football player .

Career

In the club

The striker's first club was Julius Berger, a club based in the capital Lagos of his native Nigeria. In 1999 Aiyegbeni switched to Hapoel Kfar Saba in Israel . After a year it was first loaned to Maccabi Haifa and then bought after a very successful first few months. In the 2002/03 season he caught the attention of Western European clubs with his hat trick in the Champions League against Olympiacos Piraeus and his five goals in five games. In January 2003, the Nigerian was loaned to the English club Portsmouth FC , where he was convincing and was therefore bought in April 2003 after the promotion to the Premier League . In his first season in the Premier League he scored 16 times and made his final breakthrough. In 2005 he saved his team from relegation with his goal to 1: 1 against Bolton . In the summer of 2005, the two-footed African moved for 9.75 million euros to league rivals FC Middlesbrough , where he also met regularly. Before the 2007/08 season, Yakubu moved to the traditional English club Everton for 18 million euros , where he scored 15 goals in the Premier League in his first season, finishing fifth in the top scorer list. The 2008/09 season also started very well for him, scoring in the first two games. However, Yakubu tore his Achilles tendon in the away game against Tottenham Hotspur in November 2008 and was thus out for the rest of the season.

On August 31, 2011, he moved to Blackburn Rovers for one year .

On June 28, 2012, Aiyegbeni was signed by the Chinese club Guangzhou R&F FC and played in the Chinese Super League for two years .

After working for Reading FC in the 2014/15 season , he moved to the Turkish first division club Kayserispor in the summer of 2015 .

National team

Aiyegbeni has played in the Nigerian national soccer team since 2000 and took part in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2002, 2004 and 2008 . So far he has played 57 times for Nigeria and scored 21 goals. He made his debut in April 2000 against the Eritrean national soccer team .
