The Aizawl Football Club is an Indian football club from Aizawl , the capital of the Indian state of Mizoram .
history
The club was founded in 1984. In the following years, the club took part in various competitions for amateur teams. In January 2012 there was a decisive change in the club's history: the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the Indian football association, granted the club the license for the second highest Indian division, the I-League 2nd Division . With that, the Aizawl Football Club officially switched from the amateur camp to the professional camp.
At the end of the 2015 season, the club celebrated the championship in the I-League 2nd Division. That meant promotion to the I-League , founded in 2007, the highest league in India alongside the Indian Super League founded in 2014 . This made them the first team from Mizoram to make it into one of the top two classes.
After its first season in the I-League in 2016 , Aizawl FC was actually relegated. However, since the Salgaocar Sports Club and the Sporting Clube de Goa withdrew from the league, the club was allowed to remain in the league as a replacement. At the Federation Cup of the All India Football Federation, however, the club reached the final in 2015/16, but Mohun Bagan AC prevailed 5-0.
The club then celebrated its first and so far only championship in the 2017 season . After 18 games this season - including eight wins at their own stadium and three away from home - the club was at the top of the table with 37 points. The direct pursuer Mohun Bagan AC came down to one point. With the championship, the club gained the right to qualify for the AFC Champions League . Opponent in the play-off round was Zob Ahan Isfahan from Iran. However, the club failed in qualifying due to a 3-1 defeat, which allowed him to continue playing in the AFC Cup , the second most important continental competition for Asian clubs after the Champions League. After four defeats with one win and one draw, the competition for Aizawl FC was over after the group stage.
