The AkademieGalerie is an art gallery for contemporary art of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich in the Munich underground station Universität .

Structure and location

The AkademieGalerie is located on the northern mezzanine floor of Munich's Universität subway station (Akademiestraße exit) and is part of the Munich art area . The exhibition room, which is around 8 meters deep and 20 meters long, is separated from the rest of the mezzanine floor by a glass wall and can be seen from there over its full length.

function

The AkademieGalerie is a free encounter with modern art for the citizens of Munich and has secured a place in the city's art scene thanks to the quality of the exhibitions. The exhibition room also provides information about the work of the academy and the achievements of its students. For the students of the academy, the unusual presentation of their works - with random visitors from all walks of life instead of the usual exhibition audience - is a special challenge and as such has become part of the academy's teaching concept.

At the end of each summer semester, there are annual exhibitions by students and graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts. There are also so-called debut exhibitions by artists who have not yet appeared.

history

In 1986, at the suggestion of the then President of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, Rudolf Seitz, talks began with the Maxvorstadt district committee , the cultural department of the city of Munich and the Munich public utilities as the host of the underground station about the construction of the gallery. In 1989 the exhibition space was set up; the first exhibition was on works by Eduardo Paolozzi . Later the gallery was reserved for students and graduates of the Munich Art Academy. After commissions made up of lecturers and students from the Munich Art Academy had decided on the exhibition program, professors from the academy have been changing curators since 1993 . Between 1995 and 1998 the student representatives of the art academy were responsible for the selection of the works of art, since then professors and student representatives have been working together again in the exhibition management.

Sponsors

In addition to minor contributions from the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, the AkademieGalerie has been funded by Dresdner Bank since the beginning , and since 1996 by BMW AG , and also by the City of Munich's Department of Culture.
