The B5 was a single-seat, self-supporting middle-decker glider of the Academic Aviation Group of the Technical University Berlin-Charlottenburg .

construction

Designed for long-distance gliding, the main focus of the design by Friedrich Lange and Gotthold Peter was on high cruising speed, maneuverability and easy assembly. The 15-meter-spanning two-part, bent wooden wing with box spar and elliptical floor plan was attached to the fuselage with two quick-release fasteners. The two-part ailerons had Flettner rudders . The narrow wooden hull in shell construction carried a raised pendulum elevator with Flettner rudder trim and a symmetrical double wing as a vertical stabilizer, which formed a split wing when deflected. The spring-loaded landing gear used at take-off was retractable and the landing was made on a wooden runner. The machine was built in by the DVL rented first floor of a factory building in Berlin-Charlottenburg, so that components had to be heaved through the windows.

equipment

The equipment included a removable Askania instrument panel with an electric turn indicator , artificial horizon , variometer , speedometer and altimeter , compass and a clock.

use

The aircraft registered with D-4-603 was awarded a third prize for its design at the 1937 Rhön competition and took part in the target range glider competitions in 1937 and 1938.
