The B8 was a single-seat, self-supporting shoulder- wing glider belonging to the Academic Aviation Group of the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg , which was designed and built in two versions based on the tender for a standard glider for the Summer Olympics in 1940 .

The registrations of the two machines built were D-4-660 (test sample V1) and D-4-694 (V2).

history

The aircraft was created as a result of the request of the International Study Commission for Motorless Flight (ISTUS) for a uniform glider for all participants in the glider competition, which was first planned for the Olympic Games in 1940. Tender conditions included a. the limitation of the wingspan to 15 meters, temporary buoyancy and a cockpit suitable for 1.80 meters tall pilots with back parachutes. Dive brakes had to be able to limit the speed to 200 km / h. Two specimens should be delivered for a comparison flight. The Berliner Akaflieg was asked to participate in the design competition very late, so that there were only five months before the national comparison flight.

construction

The aircraft was designed by Julius Schuck as a cantilevered shoulder-wing decker in wood construction with dive brakes and fabric-covered oars.

equipment

The equipment included a removable Askania instrument panel with an electric turn indicator , artificial horizon , variometer , speedometer and altimeter , compass and a clock.

Versions

  • B8 V1: runner and removable chassis
  • B8 V2: V-position of the wings adjustable to 0, 2.5 and 5 degrees , fixed landing gear
