The Akaflieg Stuttgart fs 33 "Gavilán" is a two-seater glider from Akaflieg Stuttgart .

History and construction

Signet of the fs 33

The "Gavilán" ( Spanish , German " Sparrowhawk ") was created in 1990 as a reaction to the redefinition of the 20 m two-seater competition class of the FAI in autumn 1989. The aim of the aircraft was to achieve high flight performance with good-natured flight characteristics and good everyday usability . Existing production forms were used to reduce development and construction times.

Calculations based on the fuselage shape of the fs 31 to determine the geometry and mass of the tail unit led to the use of a Nimbus 3D fin and a slightly modified Nimbus 4D horizontal stabilizer. A large part of the control rods in the cockpit, the wheel brake and the rear transverse power tube were taken over from the Schleicher ASH 25 .

The wings were built in the shape of the fs 32 , which was 2.5 meters longer . Their complex Fowler grand piano was replaced by a flap.

The middle decker was mainly manufactured in CFRP composite construction, in the cockpit area in hybrid construction made of CFRP and aramid fiber reinforced plastic. The wing spars are made of carbon fabric to save mass . As with the fs 31, the parting line of the fuselage shells runs horizontally in order to increase the safety for the crew in the event of a crash landing by avoiding gluing under the cockpit.

The 20-meter-spanning triple-trapezoidal wing has flaperons that extend over the entire width and are controlled by a mixer on the root rib. The winglets on the edge arch are interchangeable. The original retractable landing gear made of CFRP was replaced by a steel construction after a crash landing. In 2016, 33 new winglets were built for the fs.

Flight operations

The aircraft was presented to the public at AERO Friedrichshafen 1997. The first flight was on May 28, 1998 in Aalen-Elchingen . The subsequent flight test went smoothly except for one flight in which the left brake flap accidentally extended and jammed. A repetition of this extension, this time both airbrakes, led to the landing on June 11, 2000, during which the fuselage, the wing and the landing gear were badly damaged.

Due to the start of the fs 34 project , the complex repair was in question for a while and was finally started in October 2000. The wing was carried out with the help of Rolf Schmid from LTB Technoflug. After completion of all repairs, the aircraft flew again from May 15, 2002 until it had to be taken out of flight in 2014 due to damage to the flaperons and again in 2016 due to wing damage.
