The Aker ACS 650 ships are special multi-purpose cargo ships developed for arctic regions

Brief description

Rear view of the Norilskiy Nickel
The Norilskiy Nickel with destination Hamburg

The ship was designed by Aker Arctic . Thanks to the Double Acting Ship (DAS) concept developed and patented by Aker Yards , the highly specialized ships of the type can sail through ice-covered waters without the assistance of an icebreaker . For this purpose, the ships have a stern that is suitable for breaking ice. In severe ice conditions, the ships can be turned in reverse and thus pave their way through ice up to 1.5 meters thick or ice barriers up to 15 meters thick. The ship is equipped with a second bridge that points aft for navigation in reverse . When returning to waters with lighter ice conditions or open water, the ships can be turned 180 degrees again and continue their voyage with the bow forward.

The concept of the ships allows year-round use in the Arctic Ocean , where the ships are mainly used for the transport of metallurgical products between Dudinka and Murmansk .

The forecastle for the type ship , the Norilskiy Nickel , was built by Warnowwerft Warnemünde in 2006. This was then towed to Helsinki to the Aker-Finnyards shipyard and connected to the aft ship built there . The successor buildings were built in Warnemünde.

Technical data and equipment

The ships have a diesel-electric drive . Propulsion is carried out by a propeller pod (pod) driven by an electric motor , which is suspended under the stern. For electricity generation are three diesel generator sets are available in which three Wärtsilä diesel engines each with 5,820  kW power ABB generators driving three. There is also a harbor and emergency generator available.

The ships have four holds which are closed with folding hatch covers. The total capacity of the rooms is 19,470 m³ - 1,776 m³ in room 1, 6,539 m³ each in room 2 and room 3 and 4,616 m³ in room 4. The ships are equipped for the transport of containers . The container capacity is 648  TEU . 389 TEU can be loaded in the holds, 259 TEU on deck.

Three of the ships, Norilskiy Nickel , Talnakh and Nadezhda , were later retrofitted with two cranes , each of which can lift 45 t.

The ships are equipped with 18 cabins for the crew, a pilot room and three twin cabins for passengers.

Series size and delivery

The client for all ships is the Russian mining company Open Joint Stock Company Mining and Metallurgical Company (MMC) "Norilsk Nickel" , which ordered the ships from Aker Yards after the type ship was successfully deployed.

The names of the ships are names of the company's mines.
