Akie Abe is known in public for representing her own opinion, which often differs from that of her husband, and describes himself as a "domestic opposition". For example, she supports the anti-nuclear movement and is interested in Korean culture . Outside of official state affairs, she usually appears without her husband.

She regularly presents excerpts from her life on the social network Facebook and comments on political issues. According to her own statements, she runs her profile entirely herself. In August 2016, she caused a sensation in this way after she had visited the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor and thought of the victims of the Japanese attack of 1941 . In May 2017, a Facebook post by Abes in connection with the scandal surrounding the company “Kake Gakuen” ( 学校 法人 加 計 学園 Gakkō Hōjin Kake Gakuen ) caused another scandal when the mass media reported her in December 2015 with the comment “The Intrigues of the men ”( 男 た ち の 悪 巧 み Otokotachi no warudakumi ) discovered which Shinzō Abe and his friend Kōtarō Kake drinking champagne . The picture thus developed as a further indication that Shinzo Abe and Kake are very close.

In addition, Japanese media reported in spring 2017 that Abe and her husband were involved in a scandal involving the ultra -nationalist school and kindergarten operator “Moritomo Gakuen” ( 学校 法人 森 友 学園 Gakkō Hōjin Moritomo Gakuen ). At the request of Shinzo Abes, the latter received considerable discounts on a plot of land in Osaka for the construction of an ultra-nationalist elementary school . The government cited the poisoned property floor as the official reason for the discounts, which the school operator had to decontaminate himself. In addition, Akie Abe donated, according to the school operator, one million yen and was supposed to act as honorary director of the school. Shinzō Abe denied any interference in the construction of the school and promised during a parliamentary debate that he would step down as prime minister if he or Akie Abe were involved in the scandal. In April 2017, video recordings of a speech from September 2015 appeared on the website "Akieleaks" set up especially for this scandal, in which Akie Abe praised and also claims the educational methods used in the "Tsukamoto Kindergarten" ( 塚 本 幼稚園 Tsukamoto Yōchien ) operated by Moritomo that the criticism from China and South Korea regarding the visits by Japanese Prime Ministers to the Yasukuni Shrine is inappropriate. Recordings of Abe's visit to the Tsukamoto Kindergarten in April 2014 had already been found, showing her emotionally touched by a request from the children that she and her husband protect Japan from the “weapons of China”.

social commitment

Abe is known as an advocate of LGBT people and works for their rights. She is also committed to more women's rights and calls for more freedom and less pressure in marriage. She received much praise for her decision not to adopt a child against her husband's wishes for the Abe family to support. In addition, she founded an academy where she gives lectures and women can exchange ideas about common challenges in family, marriage, child-rearing and work.
