The lake is located between the northern and southern parts of Stora Sjöfallet National Park and to the west of it. The lake itself is not part of the park; the border runs for long stretches along the shoreline. Its water surface varies between 94 and 242 km², the water level between 423 and 453 m above sea level. NN; the mean depth is 30 m, the largest at the highest level 92 m, the maximum storage volume 4.65 km³. The drainage occurs through the two Suorva dams, which can be walked on by hikers, with their hydroelectric energy generation systems. This is the only walkable connection to the Sarek National Park from the north.
The Akkamassif, which gives it its name, is located on the southwestern shore of the lake .
An important tributary of the Akkajaure is the Vuojatätno , which flows into the reservoir from the southwest and drains the area of the Padjelanta National Park , the western Sarek National Park and the far west of the Stora Sjöfallet National Park.
The north bank of the Akkajaure is accessed from the east by a road that branches off North of Porjus from Inlandsvägen ( European route 45 ). In the summer season from mid-June to early September, there is tourist boat traffic over the Akkajaure, which connects Ritsem on the north bank with Änonjálmme (Änonjalme) on the south bank near the Vuojatätno estuary and Vájsáluokta (Vaisaluokta) a few kilometers further west. Both are starting points for hikers on the Padjelantaleden as well as in the Akka and Sarek mountain regions.
