Əkrəm Nəcəf oğlu Naibov (Əylisli) (born December 6, 1937 in Baku ) is an Azerbaijani writer .

Life and literary creation

Akram Aylisli is one of the most famous writers in Azerbaijan, both of the Soviet and post-Soviet eras. He was born in 1937 in the mountain village of Aylis, in the Nakhichevan region , near the border with Armenia and Iran . Most of his works have to do with this village. His subtle short stories and novels , which lovingly depict the rural world of his homeland, are very popular in Azerbaijan and have been translated into over 30 languages. Akram Aylisli was awarded the title “Writer of the Nation” as well as the highest orders of Azerbaijan, the “Shokhrat” (honor) and the “Istigal” (independence). In 2005 he was elected to the Azerbaijani parliament as a representative of his home region.

Stone dreams

In December 2012 he published the novel Stone Dreams , in which he addressed the anti-Armenian pogroms in Baku in 1989/90 and the massacres that Turkish troops had perpetrated on the Armenians in his home village in 1918 . In the novel, the images of the near past merge with the stories of the old people from the village about the massacre. As early as 2006, the author could not make up his mind to publish the book. The decision to do so was made after Ramil Səfərov , an Azerbaijani lieutenant who had beheaded a sleeping Armenian officer with an ax in Hungary , was welcomed as a national hero in Baku. "When I saw how far you went and how you made a hero out of this real murderer, I couldn't take it any longer."

The publication had drastic consequences for Aylisli: President İlham Əliyev denied him the title “Writer of the Nation” and the pension. The Ministry of Education removed his works from the curriculum and his plays were banned in theaters. The Chairman of the Council of Caucasian Muslims , Sheikh Allahşükür Paşazadə , branded Akram Aylisli as an apostate. He was expelled from the Azerbaijani Writers' Union. The wife and son lost their jobs. A smear campaign began in the mass media and prominent representatives of the Azerbaijani intelligentsia - actors, writers and scientists - publicly renounced him. In Baku, Gantsche and in his home village demonstrations were organized by the authorities, during which the participants shouted “Death Akram Aylisli” and “Akram is an Armenian” and burned his books, to which the writer replied: “Should they burn all my books, they didn't save anyone. "

At a special session, members of parliament demanded that Akram Aylisli not only be deprived of all state honors, but also of his citizenship, and that a genetic analysis should be carried out to find out whether he might not be an Armenian. Aylisli replied: “Should I be an Armenian, this would have been known long ago. And I wouldn't be embarrassed in the least. "

Finally, the pro-government party announced Müasir Musavat to anyone who may cut the writer's ears, ten thousand manats (about 12,000 US dollars will pay). It was only the intervention of the international community - from u. a. Thanks to Human Rights Watch , the Helsinki Citizens' Forum, the Russian PEN Center, and the US State Department , the Azerbaijani authorities were forced to put the extremists in their place. Human Rights Watch called on the Azerbaijani government to "end [the] hostile campaign of intimidation".
