Abū Hanīfa Ahmad ibn Dāwūd ad-Dīnawarī ( Arabic أبو حنيفة أحمد بن داود الدينورِي, DMG Abū Ḥanīfa Aḥmad b. Dāwūd ad-Dīnawarī ; born 828 in Dinawar ; d. 889 or 896 ) was a Kurdish botanist , historian , geographer , astronomer and mathematician . Works
His most famous work is a botanical book Kitāb an-nabāt /كتاب النبات / 'The Book of Plants'. He is named among the first to write a work in this genre of Islamic science. The author relied less on botany than on the names of plants mentioned in the poetry of ancient Arabic poetry , which he discussed from the standpoint of philology and lexicography .
With his historical work al-achbār at-tiwāl /الأخبار الطوال / al-aḫbār aṭ-ṭiwāl / 'The great (long) stories' he set a milestone in Islamic historiography . Because Iran is at the center of world history . The Persians and Alexander the Great played the main roles in ancient times. The author treats the history of the Sasanids in detail, the foundation of Islam and the early Islamic period, on the other hand, which took place in the time of Chosrau II . After a short version of the history of the Arabs and the Umayyads , the Islamic history of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan (from 685) to the time of the Abbasid al-Mu'tasim bi-'llāh (until 842) is briefly presented.
His other works, of which Ibn an-Nadīm names seventeen titles, have not survived.
