history
The city of al-Qadarif was founded by nomadic Arab tribes as a marketplace where native tribes and other goods could exchange. During the rule of the Ottomans , the city became the administrative center and seat of military associations. The Mahdists retained the status of the city and used it as a base for further conquest of the surrounding areas.
economy
The region around the city is one of the most fertile in Sudan , so sesame , sorghum , peanuts , gum arabic and sunflowers are grown for both local consumption and export. No artificial irrigation is necessary for agricultural production , as there is sufficient rainfall due to the proximity of the Ethiopian highlands . The mechanization of agriculture has also been promoted since 1954 , so that the high productivity , in addition to the good infrastructure , attracts investors and the region is considered the breadbasket of Sudan.
The airport (international identifier: GSU) has a flight path length of 1000 meters.
education
Al-Qadarif University is located in the city .
Attractions
In addition to the central market, a visit to the large grain silo (somat al-ghilal) is recommended , which is located on the outskirts of the city and illustrates the strong agricultural character of the city.
